Business Plans are for the Dogs

BUSINESS PLANS ARE FOR THE DOGS!!

Business Plan Development Through The Eyes of a Child and His Dog

By James Houser

Introducing a Fun and Creative Way for Enterprising Youth to

Learn about Launching a Business

November 18, 2008

Young people are creative and have dreams. They are often engaged in a project “venture”, starting from level zero and working towards turning this idea into a reality. Having a business plan will help them get the attention of people who can invest in their ideas and dreams and make them come true.

Entrepreneurial youth have the confidence and ability to make things happen. The skills of developing a business plan and pitching them to potential “investors” can be applied to any endeavor in one’s life.

“Business Plans are for the Dogs!” offers an engaging way to learn about entrepreneurship and business plan writing. The book examines the relationship between a child, a dog, and his parents and the issues that all parties go through when making the decision to get a child’s first dog. Author James Houser will relate the story to you, the budding entrepreneur, your business, and the other parties involved that are needed to get your company funded and in turn a success. While you are reading this book think of Bobby as yourself or the entrepreneur; the dog as the business that you are going to start; the parents of Bobby as the bank or investor; and the pitch that Bobby will make to his parents in order to bring the dog home as the business plan itself.

We invite three schools in Honolulu to offer this learning opportunity to their students to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 17 to 23, 2008). Time slots are: 8:30 am to 10 am/11 am to 12:30 pm/1:30 pm to 3 pm. Other schools may invite James after GEW. In a one and a half hour session on 18 November, James will lead the students through the process and show them the steps that will turn an idea into reality. This is an experiential learning model that is highly effective and enjoyable for the participants. Prizes will stimulate participation and learning!

By reading this book with that paradigm in mind, you will begin to understand the breakthrough in business plan development and change the way you go into the business planning process. You will no longer need to procrastinate because the process won’t be as daunting of a process as before. Instead you will understand the mindset that goes into writing one and you will be able to begin developing yours much faster and with greater focus”.

About HPU Entrepreneurship Center

Established in October, 2007, Hawai‘i Pacific University’s Entrepreneurship Center (HEC) has a three-fold mission will focus on promoting entrepreneurial ventures by members of HPU and the greater community through an integration of entrepreneurship education, outreach, and applied research. It is expected to become the cultivating site for entrepreneurial dialogue, networking, and training for all HEC participants.

Several programs and activities are being developed to facilitate entrepreneurship education at HEC. Venture internships will be structured to provide students and faculty with real work experience in early stage fast growth firms and focus on specific value adding projects in Hawaii and abroad. Additionally, undergraduate and graduate students will benefit from continuing education entrepreneurship training programs, a consulting laboratory, and student-driven business plan competitions. Accordingly, the entrepreneurship curriculums for MBA and undergraduate programs can expect to become more closely integrated, providing a smother transition between the two.

The center will also execute a number of outreach projects, which will strengthen and promote inter and intra HPU relationships with alumni and the greater community. www.hpu.edu/entrepreneurship
