Description of event

STEM Jam Half Day Training Workshop on 8 November at HPU Downtown Campus
STEM Jam is a "challenge" or competition that encourages middle and high school and engineering students to test their abilities and innovating skills in the world of math and science. The co-organizer, Collin Kobayashi is an entrepreneur with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software training program that enables users to create 3-dimensional (3-D) designs in a fun and innovative way. Participants will attend a half day workshop on 8 November to learn how to use the software, and design a product using CAD. Students' designs will be submitted to a competition run by 3D Innovations, LLC and HPU Entrepreneurship Center. Students should work individually. The prizes include software licenses and an actual 3D model of the winning design. Designs are submitted on 14 November and results announced on 22 November at the Hawaii Young Entrepreneurs Summit & Fest. Students who already know how to use CAD may not need to attend the workshop, and may proceed right away to register for STEM Jam and design. Before proceeding, please call Mr. Collin Kobayashi 808-722-8667 for advice.

Program

Theme for STEM Jam:

1. “A Better Design for Today”: Students select a product that is commonly used. The theme for this category is to have students redesign this product that is used as an everyday item. The new model will be what the students believe to be better than the original model. Students will model a product to understand some of the design aspects and engineering functions used when designed by engineers.

Rules:

Designs must originate from a 3D modeling software program (Solidworks, Inventor, Maya, etc.) Designs can be modeled at full scale. If your design is selected as a finalist, the model will be scaled down to fit within a 8” x 8” x 8” volume area.

Models will be judged on the following criteria (1-10 point scale system):

• Originality

• Technical modeling ability

• Difficulty of model

• Realistic appearance

• Creativity

Students will have a maximum of 1 week to develop their designs. All designs shall be completed and submitted to 3dcontest@3d-innovations.com no later than 11:59pm on November 16, 2008. Files need to be submitted in both .stp and .stl formats. Winning designs will have their models printed out using either FDM or Rapid Prototyping 3D Printing Technology.

Eligibility:

The contest is open to all middle and high school and university/college students. Students may use software at their schools location. If no software is available, the contest organizers will make every effort to provide trial versions of Solidworks to students.

A 4-hour training session will be held at Hawaii Pacific University, 1166 Fort Street Mall, Computer Lab Room 104 on November 8, 2008. This training session will cover the features of Solidworks 2009 and provide students with a basic understanding of how to design a 3D model using industry standard design software.

Nov. 8, 2008: A workshop will be taught by Mr. Kobayashi in a computer classroom at HPU’s FS 104. 1166 Fort Street Mall. 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Nov. 9-14, 2008: Students start working on their design projects, using the skills learned from the seminar.

Nov. 12, 2008: Mr. Kobayashi may meet with students in the classroom to answer any questions. Room 104 from 3 pm to 5 pm.

Nov. 16, 2008: Students will submit their design file to Collin  collin.kobayashi@3d-innovations.com who will then judge them based on established criteria.

Nov. 22, 2008: Winners will be announced at the Hawaii Young Entrepreneurs Summit and Fest

  1. Innovation Expo (on-going throughout the day) - Please visit link to view more details.
An interactive fair featuring young and budding entrepreneurs and innovators to showcase their venture ideas, work and services to the general public. The expo is on the lanai, a large open space where each exhibitor can hold their displays to visitors. Participants will be asked to create a logo, design a banner for their respective table, provide handouts if desired, and have a presentation board set up for explaining their idea and an outline of how they would like to bring this idea to the people who can benefit from it. Prototype is optional but desirable.
To take part, a concept outline (the "proposal") of an innovative business idea and solution for a successful venture will be submitted. The proposal should not be more than 500 words and submitted online. The proposal should contain the following information:
  • What is the product or service that you are going to develop?
  • What is the value that will be created by this product or service for the customer/client?
  • Why would there be a demand for the product or service?
  • What market are you targeting?
  • Does the business venture have a creative approach to reaching the customer?
  • How can this venture grow?
The event is opened to the public. Students who have taken part in idea/business plan/creativity competitions in their own universities, schools and colleges are invited to be exhibitors. Awards will be given for: "Most Value Created Business Idea", "Most Attractive Display", and "The Out-of-the-Box Idea".

Submit the proposal to expo@gewhawaii.com. We appreciate that non-students give a donation of $20 for a table at the Innovation Expo.
